Re: Samsung To Allegedly Acquire AMD To Compete With Intel And Qualcomm Head On However, it seems you are only considering the future of the x86 processor business.. No, I’m only considering the ability of Samsung to utilize Intel IP if they were to acquire AMD. As for the DRAM business, the major advances in the DRAM core have been in manufacturing process technology. The basic DRAM core architecture has not changed and has always been constrained by the physics of the DRAM capacitor. Commodity DRAM core frequency has long been limited to about 200 MHz. Advances in bandwidths are accomplished by going wider. Whether pre-fetching more bits from the core or operating on a wider bus. In simple terms, Rambus has made a business of increasingly pre-fetching more bits from the core and outputting on proprietary interfaces. New packaging techniques like HMC, Wide I/O etc. utilize standard DRAM core technology in their new architectures. Note that HMC achieves very high bandwidths while using DRAM core frequencies as low as 100 MHz. That results in high yielding devices and lower price points in volume production. |
