EMV Credit Card SecurityInteresting educational video from NXP on EMV. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dq5suDRoK0
Some of the more interesting statements in that video - Only 10% of Americans have EMV Cards - 50% of EMV cards are secured via NXP secure element chips - Unique access codes that change with each transaction (I thought Apple Pay invented that?) - Oct 2015 deadline will push liability from Credit Card companies to Banks/Retailers
So after watching this video, the obvious question becomes how much, if any, will CRI benefit from a US transition to EMV credit cards?
Here is an article that discusses NXP’s prospects related to that EMV transition.
And note the comment - EMV (Europay, Visa and Mastercard) is a standard driven by the EMVCo consortium.
Yesterday, Twobyte pointed out that Movie Labs was listed on page 43 of this Rambus presentation but also note the reference to EMVCo.
Here is a page from the EMVCo web site showing Approved Chips. http://www.emvco.com/approvals.aspx?id=81
I think you will find the names of those chip manufacturers to be familiar CRI licensee’s http://www.cryptography.com/newsevents/press_releases/2008/08/14/20080814-infineon.html http://www.cryptography.com/newsevents/press_releases/2009/08/13/20090813-insidecontactless.html http://www.cryptography.com/newsevents/press_releases/2008/11/04/20081104-nxp.html http://www.cryptography.com/newsevents/press_releases/2009/11/16/20091116-STMicroelectronics.html http://www.cryptography.com/newsevents/press_releases/2010/04/06/20100406-toshiba.html
Given NXP’s market share and the article above, here is a couple of links for NXP processors shown on the EMVCo Approved Chip page. Note the references to CRI.
Security licensing In addition to the various intellectual properties regarding attack resistance of the NXP Semiconductors’ owned SmartMX family, NXP Semiconductors has obtained a patent license for SPA and DPA countermeasures from Cryptography Research Incorporated. (CRI). This license covers both hardware and software countermeasures. |
