Yum, yum, 'strategic customer'Well, we know the MOU with Samsung was a dud, however that was when HH was the captain. Now, we have a MOU with a 'strategic customer' and everybody is speculating. What I think this customer is HUAWEI, which fits the profile that Dr. Black described. This customer is 'new to mobile', HUAWEI fits, and also a major player, HUAWEI fits. INTEL does not have the mobile business (ATOM line does not count). HUAWEI has a few smartphone, more importantly, HiSilicon, a HUAWEI subsidiary may need the IP, R+ and CRI that Rambus can offer, and HUAWEI is a Chinese Cisco, more known as a communication service provider than a smartphone vendor, and HUAWEI's goal is to displace Samsung as a major mobile device provider in long term. And it also fits that Rambus had already planned to set up a business development center in Beijing, China by the end of the year. Regardless who this 'strategic customer' is, other non-strategic customers may have to take a note. Rambus is an asset, not a liability for many a companies who still want to compete in mobile and server markets. This is a case that a lot remain unsaid than said, and I like it. |
