Jonathan Johnson wins majority and....
..... locks a place in the runoff vs. sitting governor. Originally thought to have little chance. Gov. Gary Herbert forced into primary election with Jonathan Johnson SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Governor Gary Herbert will face Jonathan Johnson in a bid for the Republican nomination after neither candidate secured enough votes at the state convention Saturday to avoid a primary election. The Utah Republican Party held their State Convention Saturday at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, and it is during this event that delegates elected on caucus night cast their votes for their party’s nominees for statewide office, including the governor. Any candidate who is able to secure 60 percent of the vote from attending delegates earns the party’s nomination outright and can focus fully on the general election against challengers from other parties. FOX 13 News’ Ben Winslow reports that in the first round of voting Johnson earned 55 percent of the vote while Herbert earned 44 percent. In the second round the vote was 55.11 percent for Johnson and 44.89 percent for Herbert. “This is what the caucus/convention system is all about!” Johnson told the delegates in attendance. The result means the pair will face each other in a primary election for the Republican nomination. |
