Re: Lockheed Martin aims to develop compact reactor prototype in five years, production unit in 10 years Crawdaddy so let me get this straight you believe that the difficulty involved in changing feedstock so as to be able to produce food grade pellet is an insurmountable obstacle? As to our Star Fabricator and SSL the economics of FT is directly dependent on the price of oil and with cheap plentiful electricity the price of oil will drop perhaps dramatically. As is usually the case Star Fabricator makes stuff up in order to meet his agenda. Did you read the article? Do you remember what was said about the difficulties of converting to an electricity driven transportation industry? A matter of having enough electricity and our antiquated transmission systems which needed significant upgrading in order to meet demand. Perhaps you missed how Skunk Works technology would be deployed as semi trailer sized reactors placed to serve about 80,000 homes. Now even you must realize that such a implementation would negate many of the issues with a conversion to a electricity based economy. As to Star Fabricators assertion that this would be the death of Wood Pellet electricity we have a bit of truth although as our favorite fabricator of facts suggest the death of RTK is not so inevitable as is the death of SSL. Pollution will still be a consideration as the new tech rolls out. Consider again what Skunk Works people have said. Relatively small units suitable to local needs suggesting to me that the roll out of tech will take decades before it makes a significant impact on demand although I suspect it will have an almost instantaneous impact on the price of a barrel of oil. I must point out here that a working fusion reactor will tank petroleum prices as it signals the end of a fossil fuel based economy. Although it May take decades for electricity to replace liquid fuels it seems very likely that petroleum prices will plummet making companies like SSL very unprofitable as they require a high oil price in order to make money. Why pay for expensive FT products when oil has become a low cost feedstock? One more point the first roll outs will be military ones with civilian installations following or so it seems to me. I personally hope that the Skunk Works folks really do have this one figured out as it will transform the world as it destroys the predatory relationship that has developed with the energy producers. |
