We can all look up the legal amount short, where somebody borrowed shares and then sold them short. At some point they will have to buy shares to cover their short and replace the shares they borrowed.
But how many shares have been sold short and not delivered? That is, an IOU or marker placed in an account instead of the shares. That is a hard question to answer.
The legal short position is over 20% of the float. Since 8/30 there have been less than 50 trading days and the volume has been over 2 times the float...over 130 MM shares. How many of those shares were actually delivered and how many have been naked shorted ? Will they ever quit baked shorting or will it continue until the stock is delisted and they never have to deliver?
