I filled my tank yesterday. It cost me $54 to do that. 

 

 I started talking with the proprietor, and he pointed out that in NJ there is a 32.9% gasoline tax, on top of that there is the 4% "gross proceeeds" tax, and there is another 7% "wholesaler" tax that gets passed on to the station owners. So - every gallon has 44% tacked on for state and federal taxes.  I'd only have paid $2.31 per gallon otherwise.

 

 I know that NJ has relatively low gas prices, so I can only assume that the taxes are even more ridiculous in other states.
