Re: SCO's track record remains unblemished.... You're right about this being a Microsoft scam with SCO being the proxy. In the end, look how this has worked out for Microsoft. Ballmer buried his head in the sand. Nevermind the "Linux is a cancer". He didn't have the vision to realize it would get better and better over time. Just like people complained about the noisy, smelly automobile thingys compared to the mature horse and buggy with large commercial ecosystem. These new fangled automobiles are unreliable. Difficult to start. They can even break your arm when starting them. And worse of all, they frighten the horses. But look where automobiles are today vs the horse and buggy. And look at Linux and Windows today. Microsoft completely missed the boat. Multiple times. Back in 2007 before September when SCO filed for bamkruptcy, there was the announcement of the first Netbook. Microsoft, of course, saw this is something to wipe out with dirty tricks. They completely failed to recognize that hardware was becoming so cheap that a paradigm shift would occur. I seem to recall that Ballmer also pooh pooed the iPhone announcement. Microsoft just stood by and watched. Disbelieving. As the iPhone and Android captured all developer mindshare for mobile devices. Then they realized they better get into this game. Of course, it is great watching Microsoft get it's own medicine. Someone else owns the ecosystem, and they are trying to get in later. Sort of like any alternate OS on the PCs of the 1980's or 1990's. And despite WinCE, Linux is in everything all around us. Even wristwatches, thermostats and every day ordinary things. And the Raspberry Pi explosion. Microsoft belatedly saw the huge maker bizarre and thought "me too!". But Windows 10 Core is a poor attempt to get into the game. Yes, it runs on a Pi, but only the higher performing Pi 2, and without any GUI. There is more, but Microsoft is now in the position of trying to play catch up to everything going on in an innovative world. I won't belabor Chromebooks eating Microsoft's lunch. PC sales declining. Etc. Microsoft may be waging a secret patent troll war against open source manufacturers, but those patents will run out. And I think the big patent troll days such as Apple's suit against Samsung, and some recent nobody's huge win against Apple are probably the peak. As Pamela said, it takes time for the law to catch up. But it does. I believe patent trolling does not have a big future. So Microsoft should enjoy the nickel and dimeing it can do today while it can. If Microsoft were to ask too much for patent licensing, some of their licensees might decide to take their chances in court. |
