The only argument as far as I am concerned is whether to use synthetic hemp or natural hemp.
For modern sailing vessels, synthetic hemp is preferable as it does not stretch when wet. For the restoration of historic sailing ships I think the friction through wooden blocks and pulleys is important and natural hemp should be used: it needs modern winding gear to handle the synthetic rope effectively and not damage the rope.
So, there you have it. For restoration work use natural hemp and reserve synthetic hemp for recreational use.
Well, perhaps not all recreational use.
