Re: Not good news for Microsoft ....Ah, how I remember the promise of Magnetic Bubble storage! I was young. It sounded fantastic! Of course, it would have been, if it was like today's Flash. Getting such a technology out so early in the evolution of computers might have had a profound effect on the design of operating systems. Actually, even more profound would have been a non-volatile storage that was fast enough to also be the CPU's main memory. No 'storage' needed. You would need a real stable OS. And the design of 'booting up' would include the fact that the bulk of the memory contained all of your documents and information. But documents would no longer need to be 'files'. The documents could just live as the data structures in memory. Booting would consist of just initializing the hardware, and returning to the active state of the GUI and redrawing the screen. |
