Re: Wondering if the flooding in Houston has impacted MDA in any way? That's exactly right regarding the safeguards instituted at The Medical Center after the devastation of 2001. As for residents in the area... Houston is a huge, spread out city, and a lot depended on how close people live to one of the main big bayous that crested. Houston is known (among other things, ;-)) as "the bayou city," and although rare for some of the key bayous to go over their banks (a lot of work was also done on the main bayous after 2001), if one of the big ones does crest, that's it - there will definitely be flooding of homes. We got 3 feet of water during Tropical Storm Allison in 2001 (the key feature of that one being that it just stalled out over Houston for a few days - Houston never stood a chance). And that was the first time the house flooded since the townhouse community was built in the late 70s. This time, our home did get water inside, but a very small amount (although the street in front was a river and the back patio was a lake). The cars in back got damaged (we have a carport behind our townhouse), but the house did OK for the most part. But EVERY towel in the house was used to work with what was seeping in from various places on the sides of our townhome. It was a very frightening night (once hearing, at about 2 am, that the big Braes Bayou, a few blocks away, did indeed go over its banks - the first time since 2001). One of the problems was not just the rain in Houston, but also all the rain that happened some distance away in the hill country... a lot of that water eventually makes it through to the bayous of Houston. And with all the rain of the past few weeks, the really big rain of Monday/Tuesday was just too much. It used to be that we weren't too concerned about hurricane season and the like (this particular event was actually pre-hurricane season). But that's just not the case anymore. I'm a native Houstonian and wasn't bothered by "hurricane season" until 2001 and afterwards. Big weather events are happening so much more now - at least in this area - than in the previous decades. (Hurricane Ike a few years ago that devastated Galveston, and hit Houston pretty hard; Hurricane Rita, just a few months after Hurricane Katrina, which was also a level 5 Hurricane for a while when it was in the Gulf, striking terror in the hearts of most around the Gulf after going through the national trauma of Hurricane Katrina... for a long time, while it was moving in the Gulf, Rita was predicted to hit Houston... that, in turn, caused many people to flee, causing, in turn, all sorts of other problems to occur. We (my family) now dread "hurricane season" as it approaches each year. And many, including myself, plan to leave here when we can. My family, for instance, is hoping to move to Washington state in another couple of years - the Olympic Penninsula, in the "rain shadow" area near Sequim, Washington, and the Olympic Mountains. We're all the more convinced of making such a move after this week, ;-).) Ah, I went on and on there, didn't I? Well, thanks for letting me "decompress," ;-). But mainly, thanks for asking... Linda |
