Is there a distinction between crude oil and "oil products" that is being inartfully finessed in the article?

We may not be net exporter of crude yet, but as the technology allows easy switch from one kind of fossil fuel to another for most uses it's the total picture of all kinds of fossil fuel that counts. Right now we have more NG coming out of the ground than what we know what to do with; they are shutting down wells for lack of storage capacity. Within a couple of years the US will become the biggest exporter of LNG which is fast replacing the traditional crude oil for many uses.
