Re: Biofibres Made From Green Lacewing Silk...worms don't scale as easily as bioreactors and hi-tech extruders. ???? I do not understand your reasoning behind this assertion? Nothing built of dead bits and pieces scales as easily as living systems. ... just clone the inputs, processors, packaging, etc.You may not even have realized it,but you have borrowed a term, "CLONE", from biology to describe the replication of dead industrial machinery. To "clone" a factory you must: -mine the materials. -refine, smelt, roll, forge, machine, and finish all of the components. -build sub assemblies. -develop a factory site. -integrate all of the sub assemblies into a production line. -design and create control software. -and test and troubleshoot all of the above until it works smoothly -and then be prepared for each and every component to wear out over time. To clone a biological production system such as the Monster/Dragon silkworms you need only to allow a larger percentage of the current generation to breed, and provide a larger supply of simple natural food and space (plant more trees and throw up another pre-fab barn). Limits? We are unimaginably far from the limit on the world's available acreage for silk farming! Speaking of trends, we are at the beginning of the next great industrial revolution. Wood, Metals, Plastics, inorganic composites, DESIGNED BIO-MATERIALS. Cottage industry, Craftsmen's shops, Factories, LIVING PRODUCTION SYSTEMS. The first industrial revolution was the age of the machine. The second was the rise of plastics. The third was the rise of machine intelligence. some would argue that additive manufacturing will be a fourth. The next great industrial revolution is designed and controlled biologic production! The trees and worms "mine" their own materials and refine them at the molecular level. Each single silkworm is a complete self contained and self controlled Factory! There is nothing to wear out. Each generation is created new and perfect! If scale is wealth, the worms create new wealth for you in every (worm) generation, "Just for the fun of it!" Mike Lukacs |
