Re: Neuralstem Announces Publication of NSI-566 Data in a Rodent Model of Traumatic Brain Injury - Important Caveat and Link to Full ArticleAlthough the title of the article refers to "Amelioration of...cognitive deficits...", the study did not produce evidence of such. Highlighted from the abstract: In a Morris water maze test at 8-weeks post-transplantation, animals with transplants had shorter latency to platform compared to vehicle treated animals. However, weak injury-induced cognitive deficits in the control group at the delayed time point confounded benefits of durable engraftment and neuronal differentiation. And from the full text: In the absence of significant MWM deficits, we cannot state that we observed significant therapeutic benefits. However, hNSCs did no harm. (MWM is abbreviation of Morris Water Maze) The implication is that a significant portion, and perhaps all, of the cognitive recovery in the treated animals may have been due to ordinary physiological processes, rather than the grafted cells. |
