Re: TD Webbroker Streaming Quotes Notice of discontinuance - other recommendations? My accouts are not nearly so large as some other posters but over
time I have created accounts with 3 brokers and I still use all 3.
First was TD which I have used for many many years since it was the
"Green Line." Second was Interactive Brokers. Third was iTrade which
became Scotia iTrade. All our non-regstered investments are now with IB
(myself, wife, and son). Old RRSP accounts are still with TD. Later LIRA and TFSA accounts are with Scotia iTrade. I
mostly use IB for streaming info and trading. IB is great. However I
don't believe they offer registered accounts and they have a minimum of
$50 in commissions per month. I generally do a little trading mostly to
run up commissions and cover this. I can usually cover the
commissions plus make a small profit. So it hasn't really cost me much
but it's still an inconvenience. Also they do charge (or maybe just
pass on) data fees depending on what you subscribe to. I get US data
for free but must pay $6 per month for Canadian data although I don't
subscribe to options data or level 2 which would cost more. I get those
on iTrade at no charge. I like iTrade and
generally log on if it's a market day and I'm at the computer. I'm
satisfied with it but I'm not an intensive user and don't use all their
features so can't really give you too many comments. It has seemed to
work well and be pretty-much trouble-free. I use TDW
least of the 3. One reason is a small thing but it annoys me. It logs
me off after a very short time if I don't do anything at the computer.
It seems like it only allows maybe 15 minutes without activity before
it logs me off. So I'm mostly logged-off and don't bother to sign on
unless I actually want to do something right then. I haven't
experienced many actual problems because I'm seldom logged on but I
don't find it especially useful as a tool since it won't stay
available. I haven't used all their features, although I would just
barely qualify for the "over 500,000 family" level. Maybe if I used
more features and started a streaming service I could avoid the annoying
sign-off problem. Maybe this would be simple for me to fix but I
haven't tried because I'm using IB and iTrade instead. For
a Canadian user with registered accounts who is not too active a
trader, I guess between these three brokers I'd suggest Scotia iTrade. As
far as actual tools and features go, though, in my experience IB is
better. Minimum commission is $1 and they have great currency
services. I try to do all my conversions between CAD and USD through
IB. I've found it quite workable to transfer funds online between IB
and my bank accounts at TD and a Credit Union, although it does require
some pre set-up. I have no experience with any other online discount brokers. |
